Black salt tends to possess less sodium than salt so it is often helpful to people with high vital signs and/or on low-salt diets. It is very popular in India, the Middle East, France, Japan, and Spain. It's also called as Black lava salt, Kala namak salt or special and is a type of volcanic rock salt.

It's commonly used in Asian countries surrounding the Himalayan Mountains like India and Pakistan. It has been used for hundreds of years as traditional medicine, for cooking, and as a beauty aid. It is also used as a condiment in Indian cooking and is added to chaat, chutneys, sprinkled on fruits, and other Indian snacks before eating. It tastes great on cut vegetables, too.

Indian black salt is employed extensively on Indian food, including chutneys, yogurts, pickles, salads, and every sort of fruit.

It‚ often appreciated by strict vegans because it mimics the taste of eggs in tofu and other vegetarian dishes.
